The Skyspan Frame & Glass (SFG) is a versatile, high-quality solution for both new installations and skylight replacements. Supplied without flashings, it’s ideal when reusing existing flashings or when installers prefer to fabricate their own.

Available in a range of standard sizes to suit most skylight openings, or custom-made to fit any square or rectangular design. The double-glazed unit provides a clear view to the sky with excellent thermal insulation against heat and cold.

FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

What exactly is supplied with the SFG?

The SFG is supplied as a frame and glass unit only.

It is not supplied with flashings, making it suitable for installation onto existing flashings or where the installer is fabricating a custom flashing detail.

When would I choose an SFG instead of a complete skylight system?

SFG is typically selected when:

- Replacing an existing glass skylight while retaining the original flashings
- Installing onto a purpose-built upstand or curb
- A custom flashing detail is required
- The installer prefers to fabricate flashings on site

It offers flexibility without the need to replace the entire roof detailing.

Can the SFG be used to replace an existing skylight?

Yes. The SFG is commonly used to replace existing glass or acrylic skylights, provided the existing flashing or upstand is suitable.

In many replacement projects, the SFG is custom sized to match the existing opening, minimising roof disturbance.

Are the listed SFG sizes throat sizes or overall frame sizes?

SFG sizes are listed as nominal throat sizes.

When replacing an existing skylight, it’s important to measure the clear opening rather than the external flashing dimensions to ensure the correct unit is specified.

Should I choose single glazing or double glazing?

In most cases, double glazing is strongly recommended, particularly when the skylight is installed over an internal, conditioned space.

Single-glazed glass skylights comply with AS1288:2021 for overhead glazing and are suitable for some applications. However, single glazing is prone to condensation, especially during cooler months or when there is a temperature difference between the internal and external environment.

Condensation can cause water droplets to form on the underside of the glass and drip below, which is often mistaken for a leak even though the skylight is performing correctly.

Double glazing significantly reduces the risk of condensation, improves thermal performance, and enhances occupant comfort. For this reason, Skyspan generally recommends double glazing for habitable spaces, trafficable glass floors, and any skylight installed above internal areas.
