FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Can the GSW be manufactured to custom sizes?

Yes. The GSW can be custom manufactured to suit non-standard dimensions.

Custom sizes are commonly specified to fit between existing roof beams, replace existing skylights, or meet architectural design requirements. Final sizing is confirmed during quoting.

How are GSW skylights opened?

GSW skylights are manually operated as standard using a chain winder or handle, with an optional extension pole available for out-of-reach installations.

This allows the skylight to be safely operated from floor level where ceiling heights are high.

Can the GSW be used to replace an existing fixed skylight?

Yes. The GSW is commonly used to replace existing fixed skylights where ventilation is desired.

In replacement projects, a custom-sized GSW is often specified to suit the existing opening or flashing, reducing roof modification.

Can the GSW be supplied with electric or automated operation?

GSW skylights are supplied as manual-opening units as standard.

If a project requires electric actuation, automation, or use as an access hatch, this should be discussed at enquiry stage so the appropriate product or alternative solution can be assessed.

Should I choose single glazing or double glazing?

In most cases, double glazing is strongly recommended, particularly when the skylight is installed over an internal, conditioned space.

Single-glazed glass skylights comply with AS1288:2021 for overhead glazing and are suitable for some applications. However, single glazing is prone to condensation, especially during cooler months or when there is a temperature difference between the internal and external environment.

Condensation can cause water droplets to form on the underside of the glass and drip below, which is often mistaken for a leak even though the skylight is performing correctly.

Double glazing significantly reduces the risk of condensation, improves thermal performance, and enhances occupant comfort. For this reason, Skyspan generally recommends double glazing for habitable spaces, trafficable glass floors, and any skylight installed above internal areas.
