FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Can the Skylight Hatch (SLH) be manufactured to custom sizes?

Yes. The SLH can be custom manufactured to suit non-standard openings.

- Custom sizes are commonly required when:
- Replacing an existing skylight or hatch
- Installing into concrete roofs or hobs
- Matching unusual roof openings or layouts

Final dimensions are confirmed at quote stage.

Acrylic vs Polycarbonate

Skyspan dome skylights are supplied with acrylic domes as standard, however polycarbonate domes can be specified on request.

Acrylic is the preferred standard material because:
- it has excellent long-term UV stability
- it resists yellowing, clouding, and embrittlement over time
- it maintains clarity and structural integrity for longer periods in Australian conditions
- it offers very good impact resistance for skylight applications

Polycarbonate is:
- initially stronger and more impact resistant than acrylic
- often chosen where short-term impact resistance is the primary concern

However, polycarbonate is more susceptible to UV degradation over time. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause it to:
- discolour or haze
- lose strength
- become brittle earlier than acrylic

For this reason, acrylic generally offers a longer service life for roof-mounted skylights exposed to constant UV radiation.

Is the Skylight Hatch suitable for high-corrosion or coastal environments?

For projects in coastal or high-corrosion environments, alternative materials or finishes can be assessed.

These applications should be discussed at enquiry stage so the most suitable configuration can be recommended.

Can the Skylight Hatch (SLH) be supplied with glass instead of an acrylic dome?

The SLH is supplied as standard with an acrylic dome.

If a project requires glass glazing or double glazing, a glass skylight hatch solution (such as Skyspan’s glass hatch range) should be considered instead. These systems are designed specifically for glass glazing and larger or more complex access requirements.

When is the Skylight Hatch (SLH) the right solution?

The SLH is the right choice when:

- Roof access and daylight are both required
- A glazed hatch is preferred over a solid metal hatch
- Replacing an existing skylight with an access solution
- Custom sizing may be needed
- A complete, factory-flashed system is required
