The Challenge

Canterbury House required a trafficable skylight solution to bring natural light into the level below while maintaining a seamless, walkable outdoor surface above the alfresco / entertaining area.

Key considerations included:

  • A flush, trafficable glass panel suitable for external pedestrian use.
  • Robust detailing for weather exposure (rain, debris, cleaning cycles).
  • A clean architectural outcome that integrated with surrounding paving and the contemporary rear addition, without compromising the heritage context of the existing home.

The Solution

Skyspan designed and supplied a custom 2000 × 4000mm TGF Trafficable Glass Floor Skylight, configured as a fixed, single-glazed unit for external installation.

Solution highlights included:

  • Trafficable glass construction engineered for pedestrian loading and overhead glazing requirements.
  • Externally suited surface treatment options (e.g., non-slip treatments) to improve safety in wet conditions while maintaining clarity and aesthetics.
  • A purpose-designed perimeter frame interface to support set-down integration and achieve a flush finish with the surrounding terrace/paving build-up.
  • Shop drawing coordination to align the skylight footprint with the outdoor entertaining zone and the space below, ensuring the skylight reads as a deliberate architectural element rather than a “service opening.”

The Outcome

The finished skylight delivers a dramatic improvement in daylight to the interior below while functioning as a practical part of the outdoor living space above.

From the terrace level, the TGF reads as a crisp, minimal glass plane that complements the project’s refined material palette. Below, it creates a bright, open feel in what would otherwise be a heavily shaded area—supporting the home’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle and elevating the overall spatial experience.
