The Challenge

The design and construction of Smalls Road Public School required a robust skylight solution that could introduce natural daylight into a large, high-density education facility while meeting strict public infrastructure requirements.

The project needed to:

  • Support compliance with the Educational Facilities and Standards Guidelines (EFSG).
  • Deliver consistent, glare-free daylight to central internal spaces and circulation zones.
  • Integrate large circular skylights into a curved roof structure with precise alignment and long-term watertight performance.
  • Provide a durable, low-maintenance solution suitable for a school accommodating up to 1,000 students across 43 learning spaces.

The Solution

Skyspan designed and supplied custom large-format circular skylights tailored to the building’s distinctive circular roof geometry.

Key aspects of the solution included:

  • Custom Circular Skylights measuring 3400mm external diameter / 3300mm internal diameter, designed to align seamlessly with the roof plan.
  • Engineering to meet relevant Australian Standards, including AS4285 and AS1288.
  • A low-profile, robust skylight system suitable for public education environments.
  • Even, diffused daylight distribution to reduce reliance on artificial lighting while maintaining occupant comfort.

The Outcome

The installed skylights now play a central role in the performance and identity of Smalls Road Public School, delivering abundant natural light into the heart of the building.

By illuminating the central courtyard and surrounding internal spaces, the skylights enhance visual connectivity between levels, support student wellbeing, and contribute to a bright, engaging learning environment. The result is a durable, compliant, and architecturally integrated skylight solution that demonstrates Skyspan’s capability in delivering large-scale public education projects.
