The Challenge

As part of a major redevelopment of St Edmund’s College, the design team sought to bring abundant natural light into new learning spaces while maintaining flexibility for teaching environments.

Classrooms and multipurpose spaces needed daylight for a healthy, uplifting environment — but also the ability to fully block light for AV presentations, exams, and specialist activities. Skylights had to meet stringent Section J energy performance standards and integrate with the roof structure of a heritage-sensitive site.

The Solution

Skyspan designed, manufactured, and installed 16 custom 600×2400mm GXL Skylights, each paired with a motorised BXL Block Out Blind.

Key features included:

  • Custom sizing to align with structural roof grid and classroom layouts.
  • Double-glazed skylight construction, engineered for thermal efficiency and durability.
  • BXL Electric Block Out Blinds, motorised for easy operation and full blackout capability.
  • Integration into the roof slab and flashing systems for watertight performance.
  • NCC Section J Compliance achieved through JV3 performance modelling (U-value 8.5 | SHGC 0.83).

The Outcome

The skylights transformed learning spaces with natural daylight, reducing reliance on artificial lighting, while the electric blinds provided precise control to suit diverse classroom needs.

The result is a school environment that is both bright and energy-efficient, yet adaptable for focused learning conditions. Skyspan’s ability to deliver a complete package — from design and certification through to installation — ensured a seamless outcome for both the builder and the client.
