The Challenge
The $55 million redevelopment of the Waves Fitness & Aquatic Centre required a skylight solution that could deliver abundant natural light to public spaces while meeting stringent performance and compliance requirements.
The skylights needed to balance aesthetic impact, energy efficiency, and durability in a demanding aquatic environment, all while achieving compliance under NCC 2019 Section J.
The Solution
Skyspan designed and supplied custom 2400mm diameter circular skylights featuring:
- Double-glazed laminated toughened glass units with a 12mm argon-filled cavity.
Ceramic frit dot pattern, providing solar control, glare reduction, and enhanced visual uniformity. - Aluminium frame and zincalume flashings to integrate seamlessly with the structural hob.
- Thermal performance certification (U-Value 3.9 | SHGC 0.49) contributing to Section J compliance.
- Independent engineering review confirming compliance with AS1170.1, AS1170.2, and AS1288.
Energy modelling by Norman Disney & Young confirmed the skylights supported a performance solution under NCC Section J, reducing annual CO₂ emissions by ~4% compared to the reference case.
The Outcome
The skylights transform the reception and café areas with a striking circular form that floods the interior with natural light while maintaining thermal comfort.
The ceramic frit pattern not only adds a refined architectural detail but also ensures long-term performance by reducing heat gain and glare — an essential consideration in a glass-rich aquatic environment.
The result is a facility that achieves both architectural impact and measurable compliance outcomes, demonstrating Skyspan’s ability to deliver tailored skylight solutions for complex public projects.
