FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

Can the GSL be manufactured to custom sizes?

Yes. The GSL can be custom manufactured to suit non-standard dimensions where required.

Many customers specify custom widths or lengths to suit existing roof openings, replacement skylights, or architectural layouts.

Can the GSL be used to replace an existing dome skylight?

Yes. The GSL is commonly used to replace older acrylic dome skylights, subject to confirming opening size, roof type, and flashing requirements.

Can the GSL be supplied for projects in bushfire-prone areas?

Yes. The GSL complies with AS4285 and AS1288, and suitability for bushfire-prone areas depends on the required BAL rating.

For BAL-rated projects, the required BAL level should be confirmed at enquiry stage so the appropriate glazing and configuration can be specified.

Are the listed GSL sizes throat sizes or overall frame sizes?

GSL sizes are listed as nominal throat sizes (the clear opening), not overall external frame dimensions.

When replacing an existing skylight, throat measurements should be confirmed to ensure the correct unit is specified.

Should I choose single glazing or double glazing?

In most cases, double glazing is strongly recommended, particularly when the skylight is installed over an internal, conditioned space.

Single-glazed glass skylights comply with AS1288:2021 for overhead glazing and are suitable for some applications. However, single glazing is prone to condensation, especially during cooler months or when there is a temperature difference between the internal and external environment.

Condensation can cause water droplets to form on the underside of the glass and drip below, which is often mistaken for a leak even though the skylight is performing correctly.

Double glazing significantly reduces the risk of condensation, improves thermal performance, and enhances occupant comfort. For this reason, Skyspan generally recommends double glazing for habitable spaces, trafficable glass floors, and any skylight installed above internal areas.
