FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

How is the GHMO different from a standard glass skylight?

The GHMO combines a glass skylight and a roof access hatch in a single unit.

Unlike a fixed glass skylight, the GHMO is designed to be opened for physical roof access, while still delivering natural daylight and ventilation when closed.

How is the GHMO opened?

The GHMO is manually operated and assisted by gas struts to allow smooth, controlled opening and closing.

This provides safe access without the complexity of electric motors or automation.

Can the GHMO be manufactured to custom sizes?

Yes. The GHMO can be custom manufactured to suit project-specific dimensions.

Custom sizing is commonly required for roof access points, stairwells, terraces, or where the hatch must align with architectural layouts or structural openings.

Should I choose single glazing or double glazing?

In most cases, double glazing is strongly recommended, particularly when the skylight is installed over an internal, conditioned space.

Single-glazed glass skylights comply with AS1288:2021 for overhead glazing and are suitable for some applications. However, single glazing is prone to condensation, especially during cooler months or when there is a temperature difference between the internal and external environment.

Condensation can cause water droplets to form on the underside of the glass and drip below, which is often mistaken for a leak even though the skylight is performing correctly.

Double glazing significantly reduces the risk of condensation, improves thermal performance, and enhances occupant comfort. For this reason, Skyspan generally recommends double glazing for habitable spaces, trafficable glass floors, and any skylight installed above internal areas.

When is the Manual Opening Glass Hatch (GHMO) the right solution?

The GHMO is the right choice when:

- Roof access, daylight, and ventilation are all required
- A manual, non-electric opening solution is preferred
- A glass finish is desired rather than a solid metal lid
- Custom sizing may be required
- A robust, architecturally refined access solution is needed
