A cracked, yellowed or brittle skylight dome doesn't always mean replacing the whole skylight. In most cases you can keep the existing flashing and shaft and replace only what's worn out. That's quicker, cheaper and less work on the roof.

Here are the three options, from the simplest to the most complete.

1. Replace the dome only

If the frame and flashing are in good condition and only the dome is cracked, faded or brittle, a replacement dome is all you need.

Skyspan makes replacement domes in-house and keeps Australia's largest range of standard sizes in stock. We have over 40 other dies for less common sizes, and can custom-make a dome to fit almost any skylight, including other manufacturers'.

  • Colours: opal (white translucent) is standard and softens harsh direct sun. Clear and grey tint are also available.
  • Material: acrylic as standard, or polycarbonate in some sizes.
  • Delivery: stock sizes ship in 1–2 business days.

How to measure for a replacement dome

Measure the old dome before you order. We need:

  • Flange to flange size: the full width and length of the dome, including the flat rim.
  • Shoulder height: the height of the step up from the flange. Standard is 16mm.
  • Dome height: only if it's different from standard.
  • Colour and material: opal, clear or tint, in acrylic or polycarbonate.

For a Skyspan dome, the flange to flange size is 145mm larger than the skylight's clear opening. For example, a 500mm skylight takes a 645mm dome. If you're unsure, send us your measurements and we'll match it.

2. Replace the top: Frame & Dome or Frame & Glass

If the dome and its frame are both worn, but the roof flashing and upstand are sound, replace the top half of the skylight and keep the flashing.

  • Frame & Dome (TFD) is the top part of a Skyspan Traditional Skylight, supplied without the flashing. It fits onto an existing flashed upstand, on Skyspan skylights and other brands. Standard sizes suit most existing skylights, and we can make any square or rectangular size.
  • Frame & Glass (SFG) does the same job with glass instead of an acrylic dome. It's a simple way to upgrade an old dome skylight to a glass one, using the existing flashing.

3. Replace the whole skylight

If the flashing is rusted, damaged or leaking, or you're changing the size or position of the skylight, replace the whole unit.

  • Traditional Skylight (SL): Australia's most common skylight, proven over 45 years, with Zincalume® flashings for corrugated, metal deck, tile and concrete roofs. It can be powdercoated to any Colorbond® colour.
  • Glass Skylight (GSL): a fixed glass skylight with a roof-matching frame and a clear view of the sky.
  • Flexible Shaft Skylight Kit (SL-FSK): if the old plasterboard shaft is damaged too, a reflective flexible shaft replaces it and is quicker to install.

Every Skyspan skylight is made in Australia and covered by a 7-year warranty.

Who installs it?

Replacement domes and Frame & Dome tops are straightforward for a roofer, builder or handy homeowner, because the flashing stays in place. For a full skylight replacement, use a licensed roofer or builder.
